Antique Wm. Rogers Silver Plated Cream and Sugar Bowl Eagle and the Star Makers Mark

This is a cream and sugar bowl that is silverplated that was designed and created by William Rogers, as documented by the makers mark. The eagle and the star designate the pair as actually being created by him. He worked for the International Silver Co. for five years from 1898 to 1902.

The set was cleaned with some tarnish around the handles and spout. They are in very good antique condition; some scratching and signs of wear. The cream pitcher measures 3 inches tall and 2.5 inches in diameter. The sugar bowl is 5 inches tall to the top of the handle and 5 inches across from handle to handle. These are silverplated over copper as you have a copper ring on the lid of the sugar bowl.

In 1820 William Rogers left his parents farm for Hartford Connecticut and apprenticed with Joseph Church, Silversmith. It took five years for William Hazen Rogers to become a master silversmith.

William distinguished himself from these other manufacturers by using a star or perhaps even an Eagle as distinguishing decorative features of his trademark.

William finally created his own shop under his own name, William Rogers. This new American company would go on to innovated the use of sterling silver flatware instead of the coin silver which was typically used at the time.

His brothers experimented with the creation of silver plated flatware. In 1845 their partnership used the innovative technique of electroplating to manufacture electroplated silverware. By 1847 the brothers really began to work in earnest together producing silver plated spoons with the Rogers Bros trademark.

The company created one of the most successful advertising campaigns in history. In 1912, Rogers Brothers created the 1847 Girl, a nostalgic model of the mid-19th century of innocence and beauty. Stella Brooks of Meriden, Connecticut, was the inspiration for a series of busts and full-length figures that dominated magazine ads, postcards, and brochures for decades. The figure was re-designed for Rogers Brothers 100th anniversary in 1947.

What does vintage mean?

Vintage means an item is at least 20 years old or at the most 99 years old. Once it is 100 years old, you can call it an antique. Please be aware that you are purchasing a used item. We keep trying to improve our descriptions and pictures to point out chips or dents or other issues a piece may have.

Saying that, there may be small vintage wear that go unnoticed. I do go over the piece when I buy it, wash it, take its picture, write its description or weigh it. Yet still, sometimes I miss it. The right light will show scratches on dinner plates for example. One time, you could see a crack in a piece of pottery in the photograph that you could not see when looking at it.
